In the first reading we read about God’s revelation to Jacob on his journey to Egypt. God tells Jacob ‘Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt’, because He was going to accompany Jacob. Fear had gripped Jacob as he endured much loss in his life; his father, mother, a wife and Joseph. He had experienced the fear of grave loss and loneliness.
The Psalmist says that God will not forsake His faithful ones and He will deliver us from our troubles as we take refuge in Him. God assured Jacob of his faithfulness as Jacob continued to trust God and seek Him. When famine struck, Jacob was led to send his sons to Egypt and this resulted in a greater blessing. Jacob re-united with Joseph and saw the conflict between Joseph and his other sons resolve. Furthermore his entire household received the favour of Pharoah and was looked after and provided for, in the midst of a great famine. A glorious ending to a faithful life.
Prayer: Abba Father, I trust in You, be my refuge and strength – Amen.
