A group of young boys, found a street puppy and each wanted it. A minister passing by saw that the boys were having an argument. He asked them the reason why. The boys told him that each of the had wanted the puppy. So they decided that the one telling the biggest lie would get the puppy. The minister told them that it is a sin to lie as he never lied as a boy. After a deep silence the youngest boy tells the minister “Well, you get the puppy”. We may laugh but ultimately it turns on ourselves. Like the minister often we are self-righteously convinced of our goodness and purity. Jesus’ warning in the Gospel is for such people. Pharisees and Scribes look righteous but inside they are dead and unclean. They had deceived themselves to an extent they could not see their sins. With the “Woe” statements Jesus challenges them to face the truth and repent. He does challenge you and me. Where does “Woe to you” hit us?
Prayer: Abba Father, help me see my sins and confess them. Help me walk the talk and carry an authentic heart. Amen.
