Today we celebrate the feast of St Bartholomew also known as Nathanael in the Gospel of John. His story in many ways relates to our own lives. Like us, Bartholomew carried prejudices before his encounter, he was not expecting much as he was thinking “can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Let us recall the times we have carried prejudices against God’s leading in our lives and open our eyes to His work in our midst. Nathanael’s humility led him to Christ. His openness to go and see the Lord for himself enabled him to carry a heart that captured the Lord who specifically spoke of him, “In him there is no guile”, there is no deceit. He had no other motive but a genuine heart to see and know God. It is comforting and convicting at the same time to know that God sees the intricate details of our heart. Phillip was instrumental in bringing Nathanael to Christ. Let us be grateful for the ‘Phillips’ in our time who encourage us to follow the Lord and experience his presence in prayer and worship.
