In the first reading we see unity, ambition, passion and drive towards a common goal. All of which are desired in today’s divided world. Bizarrely we see it all torn down and sent into disarray. A closer look and we see that these seemingly good works are motivated by self-promotion or in disobedience and rebellion to God. In my own love story with God, I find I am deceptively and inherently self-promoting. It is more of me than the God I want to glorify in his great mercy. If good works are not rooted in building of faith and bringing glory to God but rooted in SELF at its heart, then would not that tower we build with all our good efforts: the testimonies, the charity projects, the work in our churches and communities be just that – an impressive shiny tower devoid of all that is of God? Jesus tells us, if we want to follow him, then we must carry our cross. To give up the person we strive to be, to become the person God created us to be. I am blessed when God saves me from my self and “brings to naught my plans or foils my foolish ambition”.

Prayer: Abba Father, show me all that I am that I should not be and give me the grace to be all that you call me to be. Amen.
