In commemorating the events of Holy week, we not only recall Christ’s suffering, but also celebrate his life and share in his victory. Through his passion, death and resurrection, Jesus accomplished the mission to which his Father called him. He conquered sin and restored humanity to the justice of God. On this night, the Lord gives us an image of what the church is supposed to look like, feel like and act like. After he washed the feet of the disciples, he gave them bread and wine that had been transformed into his body and blood. Once he cleanses us, he gives us his own body and blood for us to consume, so that a physical, mental, emotional and spiritual transformation will take place in us. The broken bread symbolizes his broken body and the wine, the blood he poured out. Cleansed by the Lord, we move to a place of freedom that allows us to wash the feet of others; washing their feet by not only serving those who do not deserve to be served, but accepting them and loving them to the end, the way the Lord did.

Prayer: Abba Father, wash me whiter than snow so that I may wash the feet of those you have placed in my life. Amen.
