Today’s Gospel proclamation starts with a verse that speaks of the depth of God’s love for his children. This love is a supernatural power that has the ability to change and transform lives. In today’s first reading we see how the apostles who had been touched by this amazing love, became changed men. Their lives had been transformed. They no longer fear people rather they fear displeasing God. What does it mean to fear God? It is a respect for God and for his awesome presence and power. It is a deep-seated desire to not displease him in any way, and to put him first in whatever we do. The fear of God makes us free within, because it frees us from our own damaging self-centered thoughts. It also frees us from being afraid of the world and its opinions. This is what happened to the apostles. The Sanhedrin on the other hand were driven by their envy and by the opinions of the crowd. As we reflect on today’s readings it may be a good time to see where we stand. Are we swayed by the opinions of others, or do we fear God?
