Friendship with God is a wonderful thing. Moses was dear to God’s heart. “Throughout my house he bears my trust: face to face I speak to him…The presence of the Lord he beholds”. Don’t these words make us desire a deeper friendship with the Lord? Don’t they make us also crave a face-toface relationship with him? To not only be saved by him, but also be trusted and favoured by him? In today’s Gospel proclamation, Peter asks Jesus a strange question, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” In a situation where Jesus was unrecognisable, Peter does not ask Jesus to come closer and reveal himself but asks Jesus to pull him nearer. In our lives, even when Jesus has made his way as close to us as possible, what stands in the way of connection, is our hesitation to accept his invitation to intimacy. Often, our friendships and relationships are tinged with disappointment, betrayal, or loss. But the Lord, declares to us today: “It is I; do not be afraid.” He will not disappoint. He will not let us down.

Prayer: Abba Father, may I know you as Moses did. May your presence and your voice be louder and stronger than any storm. Amen.
