In today’s Gospel proclamation, Jesus says my mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it. In other words, Jesus considers those who spend time listening to the word, reading the word, and acting upon the word as his own in whom he takes delight. Our relationship with God grows by listening to his word, praying with his word, and translating his word into actions. Hebrews 4:12 says that the word of God is living and active and sharper than any double-edged sword. I experienced the importance of reading the word of God when I lost my job and did not know what to do. It was the daily reading of the word of God that gave me hope and the assurance of God’s faithfulness. It is amazing to know that no matter the circumstance we face, there is always a promise that we can hold onto. How often do I read and mediate on the Word? Am I drawn to reading the Word when faced with a difficult situation or when I need to make a tough decision?
PRAYER: Abba Father, I pray for the grace to listen to your word and obey. Amen.
