Thirtieth Week in Ordinary Time
The Living Word
  • Ephesians 5:21-33
  • Psalm 128:1-5
  • Luke 13:18-21

The parables of the mustard seed and the yeast are about the growth of the kingdom of God, yet the analogy of this tiniest living seed plays out in our own personal faith journey. A word or a sentence from the Bible has incredible transformative power over our lives. I think of my Hindu friend walking past a church with the music of choir practice luring her into the church. That encounter, that seed transformed her into an evangelist on fire for God. In turn she introduced me to the living hope of God, setting me ablaze with desire to seek God. Our testimonies quietly whispered to those broken, our prayers of accompaniment at the bed side of those sick, sprout new branches of growth in the kingdom of God. The word of God, spoken by those empowered by the Holy Spirit is the yeast dropped into the flour. Just as the yeast cannot be separated from the dough it permeates, the word of God dropped into our hearts in whichever form will fulfil the purpose to which it has graced our soul.

PRAYER: Abba Father, empower me so that I may live and speak your living word. Amen.
