Humility and Hospitality
  • Philippians 2:1-4
  • Psalm 131:1-3
  • Luke 14:12-14

Reflecting on today’s readings in light of St. Charles Borromeo’s memorial brings to mind the virtues of humility and hospitality. St. Paul urges believers to emulate the humility of Christ, considering others above themselves and looking out for their interests. This echoes St. Charles’ selfless dedication to serving others, particularly during times of plague and famine, when he personally tended to the sick and destitute. In today’s Gospel, Jesus teaches about hospitality, encouraging his followers to invite the poor, crippled, lame and blind to their meals, rather than seeking the company of the wealthy and influential. St. Charles exemplified this spirit of hospitality by opening his own home to those in need and by advocating for social justice and care for the marginalized. As we commemorate St. Charles, let us strive to embody the virtues of humility and hospitality in our lives, following his example of selfless service and compassion towards others.

PRAYER: Abba Father, grant us the grace to imitate the humility and hospitality of St. Charles, that we may serve others with love and compassion. Amen.
