  • Ephesians 2:11-14; 3:4-7
  • Matthew 3:15-16,21-22

Today marks the end of the Christmas season. The Baptism of the Lord signifies the beginning of Jesus’ ministry and confirms his identity as the Son of God. By submitting to the waters of baptism, Jesus linked himself with those who were coming to John and repenting. He was setting an example for his followers. Let us reflect not only on the Lord’s baptism, but also on our baptism. Through baptism our sins are forgiven and we become adopted children of the heavenly Father. In the Gospel reading, God the Father declares Jesus to be “his Son, the Beloved.” He proclaimed this not just so that we might understand Christ’s identity but also so that we might understand our identity. When we were baptized, we too became beloved children of the Father. May we resolve to live out our baptism as a sacrament that orients us toward mission and service to others following the model of Jesus. May our baptism into Christ strengthen us with grace for our walk with the Lord.

PRAYER: Abba Father, I pray for the strength to live out my baptismal calling. Amen.
