Today we celebrate the life and mission of a tireless missionary who brought the gospel to Sri Lanka under challenging circumstances. The first reading speaks of the beauty of those who bring good news, proclaiming peace and salvation. This imagery reflects St. Joseph Vaz’s dedication to spreading the gospel. The second reading highlights Paul’s heartfelt farewell to the Ephesian elders, urging them to be vigilant shepherds of God’s flock. He reminds them of their responsibility to protect and nurture the church with humility and dedication, a call exemplified by St. Joseph Vaz in his pastoral care and unwavering commitment to his mission, even amidst persecution. The Gospel reading recounts Jesus’ Great Commission to his disciples, commanding them to preach the gospel to all creation. Missionary zeal, faithfulness and the transformative power of the gospel were embodied in the life of St. Joseph Vaz, who faithfully fulfilled his calling despite great adversity.
