Faithful Witness in Persecution
  • Hebrews 12:18-19, 21-24
  • Psalm 48:2-4,9-11
  • Mark 6:7-13

Today we honor the courageous faith of twenty-six Christians who were martyred in Japan for their unwavering belief in Christ. The first reading contrasts the terrifying encounter with God at Mount Sinai with the joyous assembly at Mount Zion, symbolizing the new covenant established through Jesus. We could approach God with confidence, embracing the hope and grace offered through Christ, even in the face of persecution. The Gospel reading recounts Jesus sending out the twelve apostles. This mission requires faith, simplicity and dependence on God, attributes exemplified by Saint Paul Miki and his companions. Despite the threat of death, they remained steadfast in their mission, embodying the spirit of the apostles who trusted in God’s power and providence. These martyrs remind us that discipleship involves sacrifice. Their unwavering faith and joyful acceptance of martyrdom inspire us to remain faithful to our calling, trusting in God’s strength, even amidst trials.

PRAYER: Abba Father, grant us steadfast faith and courage in the face of persecution. Amen.
