In today’s Gospel, we encounter the Pharisees who were religious leaders using their power to oppress the Jewish people by burdening them with demands that were too hard to follow while exalting their own moral superiority. Jesus admonishes them for their hypocrisy. The Pharisees were not open to receiving Christ’s message and resisted his correction. Even in our lives, sometimes the truth may hurt, but it also opens the door to conversion. Let us reflect on whether we are humble enough to receive correction from another. When someone shows our sins, do we get offended or do we take it as useful correction and allow it to help us grow in holiness? God promises that if we are willing to accept his correction and ask for his forgiveness, he will empower us through his Holy Spirit. We will then have the fruits of the Spirit in us: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. These will help us to live an abundant life.
