Doubting Thomas proclaimed: My Lord and my God
  • Ephesians 2:19-22
  • Psalm 117:1-2
  • John 20:24-29

In the first reading, Saint Paul speaks about an egalitarian perspective on society. Christians are like a building, where Jesus Christ is the centre and the faithful form an integral part. The common fatherhood of God makes us all children, equal in God’s eyes. Today’s Gospel proclamation relates the episode for which Saint Thomas is most known, ‘doubting Thomas’.

The other disciples had told him what they had experienced. He too wanted to experience it. Despite his initial disbelief, his subsequent belief led him to Asia, notably the Indian sub-continent where he was martyred. Perhaps the other disciples also would not have believed had they not seen the risen Lord. He blesses us because we too believe without seeing. It is Jesus who called us, since he said that we did not choose Him, but that He chose us. This blessing encourages and fortifies us in our faith when our spirits are drooping in the dark times we experience in our lives, which may, otherwise, cause us to despair. Let us in faith call on our savior, “My Lord and my God.”

Prayer: Abba Father, strengthen our faith, based on belief without seeing, for which your beloved Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, blessed us. Amen.
