In Genesis, God establishes his covenant with Abraham, promising that Abraham will be the father of many nations. This covenant, everlasting and filled with promise, requires faith and trust in God’s word. Abraham’s response reflects his awe and humility in the face of such a divine calling. In the Gospel reading, we see a different response to God’s promise. Instead of accepting his message, the leaders question Jesus’ authority, ultimately accusing him of blasphemy when he declares, “Before Abraham was, I am.” Jesus reveals himself as eternal, the fulfillment of God’s covenant, but their hearts are closed to his message. There is a choice before us: Will we respond to God’s promises with the faith of Abraham, or with the skepticism of those who questioned Jesus? Lent is a time to examine our hearts, open ourselves to God’s covenant of love, and trust in the eternal life that Jesus offers, even when it challenges our understanding.
PRAYER: Abba Father, may I faithfully respond to your calling. Amen.
