It seems that human nature has not changed much over time. The Israelites grumbled against Moses; he, in turn, complained to God;and aren’t we, too, inclined to do the same? The manna sent by God was not meant to satisfy, but rather had a timeless, symbolic meaning. God’s purpose was to bring God’s people into the promised land – a land flowing with milk and honey. The manna looked like the real thing – milk – and tasted like honey.
It pointed to the spirit that accompanied them throughout their journey. But the Israelites’ senses were blunted to this message. Eating together is a recurring theme in the Gospel; the invitation to eat is reminiscent of the messianic banquet to all who accept Jesus’s words. Now it is up to us to bring the Word to those hungry for good news. So, when our Lord Jesus says “You give them something to eat,” He is inviting us to participate in building the kingdom.
Prayer: Lord Jesus thank you for giving us Yourself- the Bread of Life. Amen
