Today’s Gospel proclamation talks about how the Son of man must be lifted up and all who believe in him will have eternal life. In the Old Testament when the Israelites were plagued with serpents in the wilderness they called out to Moses seeking God’s mercy, but God asked Moses to make a bronze serpent and lift it up on a pole, so that anyone who saw the serpent may live and not die even though they were bitten by the serpent. Here in the Gospel our Lord Jesus is lifted up on a cross; a cross that used to be a sign of shame and punishment. When Jesus was crucified whoever who looked to him and believed that he is the Son of God, that he took our sins and died on the cross and is now risen, begins to have a new life in him. The old is gone, the shame is taken away and we receive the eternal life God has promised us. All we need to do is look at Jesus the Son of Man lifted up and be transformed in his love. Are we ready to look at Jesus today?
PRAYER: Abba Father, help me to look at you and believe. Amen.
