Repentance is turning away from sin and returning to God. It requires a change of thought patterns. Today’s Gospel reading is one of the most well known and loved parables – the parable of the prodigal son. How many times do we reject God with our poor choices and selfish living? We think we can run our lives better on our terms. For some of us our faith is secondary. We come to our senses and turn to God only when hit by a crisis. How many of us have the mentality of the elder son, living defeated powerless lives while striving to serve God with all our strength? We may even find ourselves angry, resentful, bitter and envious of others’ success. We do not realize the immensity of our inheritance as children of God. The second reading beautifully illustrates how this restoration takes place through the redeeming work of Jesus on the cross – we are made new creatures in Christ. Living in our inheritance, come let us taste and see the goodness of the Lord.
PRAYER: Abba Father, open my eyes to see the immensity of my inheritance and all it entails as your child. Amen.
