In today’s first reading we are introduced to Eleazar, the Second High Priest, a man from whom we can learn valuable traits. He knew well the stakes at hand – He either pleased God or defiled the laws of God to save his mortal life. How many of us would twist ‘for the time being’ into the opposite to suit our own comfort and convenience? Eleazar knew his God and he had an “Eternal Perspective’ in mind, which made his decision clear, albeit not necessarily easy. Do WE have this eternal perspective in mind. Eleazar was also concerned of the example he was setting. Are WE mindful that others are watching our reactions? Our children, our colleagues, our employers, our friends and most importantly, God himself? In today’s Gospel we meet Zacchaeus we are a familiar with. He was eager and curious to SEE who this Jesus was. As 1 Samuel 16.7 says “… man looks at the outward appearance but the Lord looks at the heart”. Jesus saw Zacchaeus’ heart and offered him Salvation.
Prayer: Abba Father, give us your eternal perspective as we face the joys and challenges of life. Amen
