Repentance and Salvation
  • Numbers 21:4-9
  • Psalm 102:2-3, 16-21
  • John 8:21-30

In today’s first reading, we see the Israelites, frustrated and weary, speak against God, leading to their punishment by fiery serpents. However, God, in his mercy, provides a remedy: a bronze serpent lifted on a pole. Those who look upon it are healed. This foreshadows the ultimate salvation in the Gospel reading, where Jesus speaks of his own impending crucifixion. Jesus, lifted on the cross, becomes the source of life for all who believe in him. These readings remind us that, like the Israelites, we too can become disheartened and turn away from God in our struggles. Yet, God’s love never falters. In our repentance, we find forgiveness and healing through Christ. The Lenten season calls us to gaze upon the cross, to confront our sinfulness, and to trust in the boundless mercy of God. Just as the Israelites were saved by looking upon the bronze serpent, we are saved by looking upon Jesus, who was lifted up for our redemption.

PRAYER: Abba Father, help me to turn my gaze to the cross. May I recognize my sins, repent, and trust in your healing love. Amen.
