Today’s Gospel proclamation talks about the rich young man who wanted to follow Jesus. Our Lord’s response was simple; follow the commandments. The rich young man said he had been following the commandments all his life, but yet he did not know how to follow Jesus. Aren’t we also the same? We follow the commandments but yet there is something lacking. We do not seem to know how to follow Jesus. Our Lord asked the rich young man to sell all he had, give it to the poor and then follow him. This was not the response this young man expected. How could he give up everything he had worked hard for? After all aren’t they fruits of his labor? This is the problem we face today as well. We love Jesus, we follow the commandments but are unable to surrender all that we are and all that we have to the Lord. Peter, Andrew, James and John left their boats to follow the Lord. In the same way are we willing to surrender our lives to follow the Lord?
