The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away
  • Job 1:6-22
  • Psalm 17:1-3,6-7
  • Luke 9:46-50

Today’s readings invite us to embrace humility. Humility is “seeing ourselves as God sees us: acknowledging that every good we possess is a pure gift from him” (St. Thomas Aquinas). Job lost everything in the blink of an eye. Despite this, he chose to praise the Lord: “Naked I came forth from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I go back again. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord”. In the Gospel reading, Jesus emphasizes the importance of being childlike: to fully trust in the Lord. Children leap into the arms of those who care for them in unwavering trust. Similarly, we are called to trust our Father. However, as worldly concerns weigh on us, we may find it challenging to trust people and God. Trusting in the Lord is the key to everything. Jesus emphasizes in the Gospel that, “the one who is least… is the one who is the greatest.” Therefore, let us strive for humility, relying on the Lord, and praying for the grace to be childlike, trusting in him completely.

PRAYER: Abba Father, guide my mind, open my heart, strengthen my will and soothe my emotions. May humility become a guiding light in my journey Amen.
