Newborn babies cannot have anything other than milk. No other food or beverage, not even water would do although our bodies consist of 70% water. Newborn babies can only digest and grow with milk. In this light imagine what St. Peter is asking us to do. He is asking us to seek all things spiritual just as newborn babies yearn for milk. When they are hungry, their only course of action is to cry till their need is met. They are so dependent on that milk to grow. Similarly, we are called to have a single focus – to desire the spiritual sustenance that we were created to survive on. What is spiritual food? All things that cause our faith to grow. The flesh opposes spiritual things. 1 Peter 2:11 says “As strangers and refugees in this world do not give into the bodily passions which are always at war against the soul.” Are we there yet? Are we where St. Peter invites us to be? If not, what baby steps can we take to be focused on our journey with the Lord and seek spiritual food as newborns desire milk?
PRAYER: Abba Father, as we desire spiritual food, guide us in all wisdom to draw our sustenance from it. Amen.
