Today we acknowledge the authority bestowed upon St. Peter by Jesus himself as we read in the Gospel proclamation. At an opportune time, Jesus asks his disciples: “who do people say I am?”. Jesus was widely known in Israel as a great man of God, he was even compared with the greatest of the prophets: John the Baptist, Elijah and Jeremiah (v14). Jesus then asks his disciples; “who do you say I am?” Out of the apostles, St. Peter who was quick to respond exclaimed that Jesus was “the Christ, the Son of the living God”. Jesus goes on to explain that St. Peter is blessed because he has received this revelation from God the Father and not from flesh and blood. Just like to St. Peter, God reveals the Son to the humble of heart. If our desire is to know who Jesus is, we must not try to figure out the truth and the vastness of God through our intellectual capabilities. Instead, we need to humbly trust in the Word of God and the teachings of the Church and allow God to reveal who his Son is.
PRAYER: Abba Father, give us the grace to be humble of heart. Amen.
